I have been following Francisco Gella’s work as a choreographer for about five years now and have marveled at the diversity of groups with which he has been able to set his works on. Here at IVC he has set two exquisite yet distinct contemporary ensemble pieces. He comes well prepared to set his pieces on the dancers in a very efficient way that utilizes their strengths within his fluid movement vocabulary. Francisco crafted both pieces utilizing stage space, costumes, and lighting in very different ways yet each piece had a captivating ebb and flow that partnered with his music choices and culminated in a cohesive deeply satisfying experience. You could often hear the audible visceral responses from the local audiences, and those immersed in the dance world at American College Regional Conferences, that witnessed his unique ability to surprise and delight their senses with breath-taking pieces. The dancers at IVC always benefit from being pushed to meet his high professional expectations. In addition, the college also benefits from those witnessing the results of his challenging our dancers and his polished exhilarating choreography. I would certainly like to hire him again in the future.
